What’s MS, STPE, SMP, STPU, SPU

2018-08-03

MS, STPE, SMP, STPU, SPU. . . Some of these products are currently relatively hot products, but for many people, these products are a bit messy, silly and unclear! So what are they products? What are the characteristics? What is the relationship between each other? The answer is coming

In fact, these abbreviations refer to "the sealant synthesized on the basis of related resins". It is easy to distinguish the above terms from the molecular structure and development history.

First look at the meaning and characteristics of their respective English abbreviations:

MS : Modified Silane (Silyl) Polymer (silane modified polyether)

Features:

A. Health and environmental protection

The traditional sealant (silicone sealant) contains formaldehyde, which releases formaldehyde, VOC (volatile organic compounds) and other health hazards. MS sealant is formaldehyde-free and isocyanate-free, solvent-free, non-toxic, odorless, and VOC released far below international standards. It is the most environmentally friendly construction adhesive product.

B. No pollution to porous materials

Conventional silicone sealants deposit silicone oil, which causes contaminants to adhere to them. Especially when used in porous materials such as stone and concrete, it is difficult to remove the surrounding pollution. It is one of the main sources of pollution on the facade of buildings, greatly reducing the aesthetics and image value of the building, while MS sealant has convinced such defects in mechanism and will produce the same pollution.

C. Strong adhesive

In silicone sealant, polyurethane sealant and MS sealant, silicone sealant has relatively weak adhesion, and polyurethane adhesive has strong adhesion, but it needs to be used with primer. MS sealant has excellent bonding performance and can be adapted to most building substrates do not require primer bonding.

D. Weather resistance

The molecular structure of MS sealant determines its good weatherability. It can maintain good elasticity when exposed to the outside for a long time. The colloid itself will not generate bubbles, will not crack, and the bond strength will last for a long time. It has good thixotropy and Extrusion, adapt to a variety of operating environments such as outdoor, indoor, wet, low temperature.

E. Paintable

Conventional silicone sealants cannot be coated with paint. They often need to be color-matched to match the color of the exterior paint. The production process is time-consuming and labor-intensive. It is difficult to guarantee the same color and the cost is difficult to control. MS sealant can be directly applied to the surface of the gel. It is not compatible with most coatings. It avoids the troubles and perfectly realizes the uniform color of the outer wall to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the building.

F. Stress relaxation

The building substrate will shrink with time, which will lead to the tendency of the joint to expand slowly. The common sealant bonding surface will bear a large mechanical effect, and the sealant will be broken and the bonding surface will be damaged. problem. MS sealant combines stress and elasticity to minimize the effects of shrinkage of the building substrate under stress relief even when stretched for a long period of time.

application:

a. Construction area: leakage prevention and sealing of building roof, sealing of air conditioning system, crack repair of buildings, skylight installation and floor laying, decorative panel composite, kitchen, bathroom and other ancillary joint sealing, residential doors and windows and concrete structure Seal.

b. Industrial fields: sealing of doors and windows, windshields, high-speed rails, bonding of ceiling and side frames, bonding and sealing of ships, containers, food refrigerated vehicles, etc.

c. Product assembly field: bonding of the same or different materials, laminate bonding and assembly of decorative panels, assembly of mechanical components.

STPE: SilaneTerminatedPoly-Ether

"Hybrid" STP-E sealant, also known as silicone modified polyether sealant, modified silicone sealant, is a high performance elastomeric sealant based on a silane-based polyether-based polymer.

Hybrid STP-E sealant inherits the advantages and strengths of silicone and polyurethane sealants, while exhibiting excellent weatherability and durability and high resistance to deformation and displacement, good adhesion, finishability and environmental friendliness. , workability and low fouling.

Based on the above excellent performance, hybrid STP-E sealant can be applied in the fields of construction, automobile manufacturing and container manufacturing.

SMP: Silane Modified Polymer

The silane-modified polymer from Dow's VORASILTM is an effective breakthrough for adhesives and sealants. It is a unique combination of polyurethane and silane end groups. It has low viscosity and fast cure at room temperature. . This product is beneficial for adhesive and sealant manufacturers to achieve high performance properties, and has the performance of silane without any cost of silane. Compared to other traditional products, VORASILTM SMP has many advantages in terms of operation and durability. The specific advantages are:

Excellent viscosity and curing time; wide range of applications to meet the special needs of customers; cost-effective; hydrophobic, UV resistance, high temperature resistance, oil and hydrocarbon resistance and weather resistance.

All three of these refer to resins that use "silane-terminated polyethers"; why do you have three names for the same?

MS Polymer® registered trademark, the latter is called SMP, is a respect for intellectual property; STPE has two meanings, one is the abbreviation of “silicone terminated by silane, and the other is a Wackerresin. It was tested in China in 2014 and is also a respect for the intellectual property of MS Polymer®!

STPU: Silane Terminated PU

The term STPU refers to a modified silane-terminated (STPU) resin/sealant, which refers to a polyurethane chain as a molecular skeleton and a siloxane-based high end formed by attaching a siloxane group to both ends of the polyurethane chain. Molecular resin. STPU sealant is a one component, high performance, neutral cure adhesive. The product is environmentally friendly, does not contain toxic and harmful substances, and has good bonding ability to most substrates such as metal, ceramic, wood, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), etc. After curing, the surface can be painted and widely used. Elastomeric seals in the manufacture and maintenance of various vehicles, ships, machinery, elevator cars, containers, electrical equipment, industrial equipment.

Relative to polyurethane: NCO without toxicity; excellent weather resistance; no bubble formation; good adhesion to various organic/inorganic substrates; no need for primer coating.

Relative to silicone: paintable; no silicone contamination; no silicone volatiles; good adhesion to a variety of organic / inorganic substrates; better mechanical properties.

SPU: Silane(modified) PU

"Silified" polyurethane, one-component moisture-curing polyurethane (PU) sealant is widely used in civil engineering, transportation and other fields. It has high strength, good elasticity, tear resistance, wear resistance, puncture resistance, and The substrate is non-polluting, acid and alkali resistant, organic solvent, paintable, etc., but because the one-component PU sealant is sensitive to moisture, it is easy to cause storage instability, long-term UV aging resistance is weak; The process releases CO2, which easily forms adhesion failure, which causes problems in the adhesion of smooth surfaces such as metal and glass. Therefore, primers must be used to improve the adhesion and UV aging resistance.

SPU refers to silanized polyurethane, SPU is a material modified by silane end capping of polyurethane as main chain. In addition to retaining the advantages of original PU sealant, this kind of sealant has extreme heat resistance, aging resistance and weather resistance. Great improvement, good adhesion to common substrates such as metal, glass, PVC, etc., and it does not contain free isocyanate, non-contaminating solidified exudate escapes, does not pollute the surface of the bonded substrate and The surrounding area is more in line with environmental protection requirements.

At present, research on SPU sealant is very active. High-strength SPU sealant has been applied to glass bonding of cars and high-speed rails, such as: Simson ISR70-03 of BOSTIK Company, 70-08, SIKAFLEX of SIKA Company 221FC and so on.

The latter two are quite different from the first three, they are basically closer to polyurethane, or polyurethane.

Development History:

A. In 1978, Kenake of Japan invented MS Polymer®; and it was promoted globally. The significance of MS is clear for the industry;

B. In 1988, a European company used MS (still used today) synthetic sealant for the first commercial sale; called SMP, is a high respect for patents and intellectual property! And rapidly expanded, and entered China in 1999. The formula is the same as A.

C. In 2002, a US company introduced SPU; the molecular formula is basically polyurethane:

D. In 2011, Wacker's GENIOSil® α-STP-E won the architectural award in Europe, marking the birth of STPE resin; entering China in 2013; and selling in 2014. Also known as "hybrid" MS.

E. In 2012, Momentive (established in 2006) modified polyurethane and SPU appeared.
